STARTING WITH FOOD

After obtaining the Green School certificate in the topic Waste, we embarked on the next certification period.
We formed a collective and started meeting regularly. Using the Explore Green School game, we took a closer look at the steps of Green School and looked for a suitable area where we wanted to improve as a school.
After careful consideration of all the options, we chose the topic of Food. We carried out an environmental audit to find out what our strengths and weaknesses were. Working with the cooks and chefs, we spent a week weighing the amount of kitchen waste thrown away in our canteen - the leftover food that we don't finish for lunch. And what is the result? We throw away approximately 140 kg of food waste per week.
Our aim is to reduce this amount, as well as to raise awareness of responsible eating.

The Green School

Organized by: Živica – the Centre of environmental and ethical education; sponsored by the national network of organizations Špirála and the Foundation for Environmental Education (The Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic; and a civic association Supertrieda (SuperClass)

Whole-school participation.

Friendly relationships between pupils and teachers, positive attitude, meaningful ways to spend free time, enthusiasm, optimism.   These all and more are incorporated in the biggest environmental project in the world called “The Green School”; the project our school is a part of.

The Green School promotes:

  • ability to solve problems at school and home environment;

  • cooperation and teamwork, as well as ability to act as an individual;

  • critical thinking;

  • creativity, activity, curiosity;

  • sense of responsibility; responsibility for actions and their consequences.

These skills will be promoted trough a specific topic – GREENERY AND PROTECTING NATURE.

WASTE SEPARATION MATTERS

The Green School team took part in a field trip to the landfill and sorting line on Wednesday 3rd May 2023. They were able to see first-hand what happens to waste after it is thrown away. First, the pupils observed how biological waste is processed and compost is made. They then moved on to the landfill, which is the final destination for municipal waste. The second part of the excursion took place on the sorting line, where the Green School team was shown how paper, different types of plastics, tetra-packs and wood are sorted.

The visit was an inspiration to recycle responsibly in our daily lives, not to burden the environment and to try to reuse as much waste as possible.

we already have the certificate in our hands

9th October 2015 was a special “green” day for us. As participants of “The Green School” project in the school year 2014/2015 we were doing various Earth-friendly activities at our school. Thanks to our participation we had been invited to the 10th The Green School Award Ceremony where we were given an “On the Way to the Green School” certificate. We are all excited about this accomplishment and we hope our further Earth-friendly activities in this school year will get us “The Green School Flag”.

Tree Adoption

International Tree Day was held on 20 October.  Each class had chosen a tree in our school yard to “adopt”.  We made a name tag for our trees and add some interesting information about the trees.  This way we learned more about different trees and created a “learning park”.
