BULLYING PREVENTION AT SCHOOL

“We are a school, where bullying and cyberbullying is not tolerated in any form! “

The basic preventive measure at our school is adopting the fundamental principle: "We are a school where bullying and cyberbullying are not tolerated in any form!" We acquaint all students and school staff with the essence, forms, and dangerous consequences of bullying as antisocial behavior of individuals and groups. Bullying is the behavior of a student (or students) whose intention is to harm, threaten, or intimidate another student, or an intentional, usually repeated attack on a student or group of students who, for various reasons, cannot or do not know how to effectively defend themselves.

It can manifest as:

  • Verbal aggression: insults, mockery, name-calling, threats, ridicule, inappropriate joking, and humiliating the victim, etc.

  • Physical aggression: pushing, slapping, kicking, beating, encouraging others to fight, threatening with a knife or stick, choking, pulling hair, poking with a compass or pencil, etc.

  • Other aggression: damaging or hiding the victim's belongings, tearing, destroying school supplies or clothing, scribbling in notebooks, textbooks, homework, taking possession of the victim's belongings, etc.

  • Psychological manipulation and torment: giving nonsensical orders, forcing the victim to serve or carry various items – lunch, money, etc.

Bullying, in addition to threatening the mental and physical health of the student, also reduces their performance and has a significant impact on their educational outcomes. It is essential for students, teaching staff, and parents to know that these forms of behavior are not harmless humor or fun. They should familiarize themselves with the negative consequences of bullying, both for its victims and for the aggressors. We consider it especially dangerous to underestimate the initial signs of bullying.

As part of effective bullying prevention:

  • We create a positive atmosphere in the school,

  • Teach and encourage children not to be afraid to address any of their problems with teachers or parents,

  • Work on developing close cooperation between students, school staff, and parents,

  • Provide education on bullying prevention, especially through the class teacher,

  • Continuously monitor the occurrence of bullying through an anonymous online questionnaire,

  • Cooperate with the school psychologist,

  • Inform teaching staff, students, and parents about what to do if they learn of any form of bullying.

In both preventing and addressing bullying, we follow the directive of the Ministry of Education, Science, Research, and Sport of the Slovak Republic No. 36/2018 on the prevention and resolution of bullying in schools and school facilities, as well as the school's internal directive.

What can you do if you do not feel safe at school?

• Be sure to tell your parents about your problems and ask them for advice. You need their help and support, and they will certainly try to help you.
• Talk to your class teacher or any other teacher you trust in our school.
• If you do not want to talk to teachers, you can go to our school psychologist Ms. Zuzka Polťáková and disclose your worries to her.
• If it is difficult for you to talk about what is happening to you, you can write a note (letter, message) and drop it in the mailbox next to the school psychologist‘s office on the ground floor opposite of the school canteen.
• It will also help if you talk to your classmate or other pupil, who can advise you on what to do and can stand up for you if necessary.
