Whom should I contact if I am interested in enrolling my child to Private Primary and Secondary School BESST?

Is it necessary that child speaks English before admission to school?

No, it is not necessary.

Does a child need to do entrance tests before admission to school?

Yes, we test children from mathematics and English.

How many English lessons per week do pupils have?

Pupils in Years 1 - 4 have 5 English lessons, 2 of which are taught by a native English speaker. Pupils in Years 5 - 9 have 5 English lessons, 3 of which are taught by a native English speaker.

What time do the lessons take place?

Teaching takes place between 8:30 a.m. - 2:35p.m. On the days when older pupils have 7 lessons, their timetable is planned until 2:55 p.m.

Is it possible to come and observe a lesson?

Yes, it is necessary to arrange an appointment with Mgr. Lucia Hečková (0903/989 092, lucia.heckova@besst.sk). The school also organizes Open Day, usually in February/March.

What is the enrolment process into the 1st grade like?

The enrolment is in two parts. The first part is testing a child in group work, here we monitor if and for how long a child can concentrate on his/her work. Second part of the enrolment is the individual testing of pupils in the following areas: vocabulary and speech, mathematical concepts, phonematic awareness, visualization and visual motion.

Is English language testing part of the enrolment process into the 1st grade?

No, it's not.

How many students are there in one class?

Maximum 16.

Is there a streaming of the English language groups?

No.

To what extent does the school provide catering?

The school provides snacks, fresh fruit or vegetable juice, lunch and afternoon snacks for our pupils.

Does the school provide catering for pupils with dietary restrictions, such as gluten allergies or lactose intolerances?

Yes, following the recommendation of a doctor, the school provides gluten-free or lactose-free lunches.

How does the school deal with bullying?

When dealing with bullying, the school proceeds in accordance with the directive of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Slovak Republic No. 36/2018 on the prevention and treatment of bullying of children and pupils in schools and school facilities and the internal directive of the school SZŠ BESST. The school has a form for reporting suspected bullying: https://forms.office.com/e/zniSthd6Vt When identifying and investigating bullying, the school principal or a member of the team designated by her (class teacher, social and pathological prevention coordinator) proceeds as follows:

(a) Provide immediate assistance and protection to the victim, b) provide psychological crisis intervention if necessary, (c) provide increased supervision in the classroom where bullying is taking place, (d) take measures to prevent possible perjury by isolating the aggressor during the bullying review, (e) review the bullying without delay at a time when the aggressor has not yet agreed to a joint statement with the victim, witnesses or other persons who have brought the bullying to his/her attention, (f) arrange for a confidential discussion with the victim in a safe environment, (g) ensure that the victim is not confronted with the aggressor, (h) ensure that appropriate witnesses are identified and individual or small group interviews are conducted, (i) preserve evidence when cyberbullying is suspected, (j) contact legal representatives in relation to the victim, the aggressor and the witness of the bullying, (k) where necessary, contact the locally relevant CPaP to arrange classroom intervention, (l) keep written records of the handling of individual bullying incidents, (m) inform the teaching staff and the legal representatives of the victim and the aggressor of the outcome of the investigation, (n) if necessary, report suspected offences or criminal offences to the relevant police services.

Is there a support team of specialists at the school?

Yes. There are school psychologists and a special educator.

The school psychologists help to create a positive atmosphere in the school through the implementation of group prevention activities. They also work closely with parents and work with children individually to help them cope with difficult life situations, adaptation difficulties, etc.

A special educator works with integrated pupils and cooperate with all teachers. She also provides consultation to parents of integrated pupils.

Is it possible to attend any after-school activities?

Yes, it is, within the times of the school children's club (2:35-5:00 p.m.) there are many trainings and activities. There are about 25 various sport, artistic, or robotic activities at present.
